چکیده

In this paper we examined the use of context to “restore” a degraded auditory signal using the standard Auditory-Only (AO) phoneme restoration paradigm and an Auditory-Visual (AV) version. The experiment was a modified replication of Trout and Poser [1] who used the Samuel [2] discrimination paradigm in which white noise was either superimposed (added) on a phoneme in a word or replaced it entirely. One modification was the use of a 2IFC task in which both the added and replaced versions were presented. Another modification was that we used single words rather than sentences. The key issue was whether visual speech would augment or decrement the phoneme restoration effect. Trout and Poser used a signal detection analysis and found that visual speech reduced the bias to report a stimulus as intact (added). We found that visual speech increased the phoneme restoration effect.

Comparative Effect of Visual and Auditory Teaching Techniques on Retention of Word Stress patterns: A Case Study of English as a Foreign Language Curriculum in Iran

This study aimed at investigating the effect of visual (Cuisenaire Rods) and auditory nonsensical monosyllables using Pratt speech processing software as teaching techniques on retention of word stress. To this end, 60 high school participants made the two experimental groups of the study each having 30 students on the basis of their proficiency scores on KET (Key English Test). In one experime...

Atypical phonemic discrimination but not audiovisual speech integration in children with autism and the broader autism phenotype

When a speaker talks, the consequences of this can be heard (audio) and seen (visual). We use a novel visual phonemic restoration task to assess behavioral discrimination and neural signatures (ERP) of audiovisual processing in typically developing children with a range of social and communicative skill and in children with autism. In an auditory oddball design we presented two types of stimuli...

Importance of Visual Cues in Hearing Restoration by Auditory Prosthesis

Auditory prostheses, such as cochlear implant and auditory brainstem implant, are used clinically to restore the hearing of patients with sensorineural hearing loss. These devices can considerably improve the auditory information conveyed to the auditory cortex, but proper rehabilitation process is usually necessary to restore auditory communication to an adequate level. Therefore, improvements...

Visual speech modifies the phoneme restoration effect

The current study examined how seeing the talker (having visual speech information) affected phoneme restoration. For this purpose, six phonemes (/b/, /p/, /d/, /t/, /g/, /k/) in word contexts were used as target sounds in a 2IFC task in which participants were required to choose the white noise filled interval in which a target phoneme was present. The results showed that choosing the interval...

نوروپاتی شنوایی در دو بیمار مبتلا به نوروپاتی عمومی: گزارش موردی

Background: Although it is not a new disorder, in recent times we have attained a greater understanding of auditory neuropathy (AN). In this type of hearing impairment, cochlear hair cells function but AN victims suffer from disordered neural transmission in the auditory pathway. The auditory neuropathy result profile often occurs as a part of that of the generalized neuropathic disorders, indi...
